I am working on a project for my parents for Christmas. It was an incredible idea in January. Still a stellar idea in July, and now it will be great if I can pull in together and hope for mediocre.
That being said,....because of this project of memories it has prompted me to revisit a LOT of my memories of my family and occasionally makes me a soggy little mess.
The other day during a snow storm I began writing about why I love to quilt. I am not the handiest gal when it comes to homemaking projects and I truly have no gift for color. (I leave that to my cute Sister in Law Mandee) . I love to quilt because my one of my favorite memories of my Grandmother Heslop is the November she took the time to come help me hand-stitch a huge king size quilt for the love of my life (at the time)...it should be noted here that 'He' left my life a short six months later and all I wanted was the quilt back (didn't get it). Anyways, I was in college and would come home at random times of the day, there was Grandmother. Stitching away as though she had nothing better to do than work on this quilt and wait for me to come sew with her. We would pull back Mom's huge front room curtains and watch the snow fall while we finished the enormous project.
There is not a snow fall to this day that passes in which I wish for just one moment with all my heart to have just one more quilt to work on with my Grandmother, I miss her so much some days and I wonder if she knew how much I loved her.

The Doctor and The Phone Call
I am a diligent little girl when it comes to going to my "annual" exams. If you are a girl I would like your admiration for actually doing what many many of you don't. (I'm not judging, I'm just saying,...) We won't even discuss my true motives behind my diligence at these annual treks to the ob/gyn.
Anyways, so I am looking at the ceiling while both the doctor and I are trying to pretend that what is going on isn't so we make up small talk about everything from the weather to current books I like to read. Then my phone rings. Normally I do not try to stop everything (especially THIS) for a phone call but I had left Hunter home to babysit eight kids and was concerned that the house had burned down. So, I had the nurse get the phone and hand it to me. Then my dear little Garrett's voice came on the line. "Mom, can I make cookies?" My mind is screaming "WHAT!" but it is ok because Garrett only calls to ask questions about food and then hangs up. No, not today. He would like to visit and has such probing questions like, "Are you busy," (yes) "Why are you talking so fast" (embarrassment does that to me), "Where are you?" (doctors) "are you sick?" (no) "Why would you go to the doctor's if you aren't sick?" (no answer) "Mom, are you in a hurry?" (Yes we will talk later). The boy never talks more that a couple words on the phone and today of all days is the day that he chooses to forge a stronger relationship with me. Good Heavens! He hopefully has a good job when he grows up to afford the therapy necessary from today. In the spirit of "I'm a great mom!" I ended our phone call by hanging up on him.

Dallen Just Makes Me Smile....
My Baby is the funniest kid in my world! Yesterday he came home from school and asked if I knew what he did at recess. No, I did not....there is always the assumption that he played and if we are lucky took a quick break to go to the restroom. (to know the boy is to know that he needs to 'go' 24/7). Anyways, he said that no, he wasn't playing he was standing very still with his eyes closed and concentrating. I asked what he was concentrating on and he said, "trying to talk to you with my mind." Hmmmmm. I again questioned, "What did you need?" Him, "Just to say hi, but you were probably asleep or your mind is not as strong as mine., I'll try again tomorrow." Then he runs off.
Should I be offended that 1) He thinks I sleep all day or 2) his little mind has more power than mine? Given enough time I would have been able to come up with a response but first I need to relax.:)

What doesn't kill you will make you stronger...
I decided to start off my 39th year of life I would really start to kick my butt into gear. Now normally I understand that this behavior is saved for January 1st so I am really shaking up the universe with life changing goals in September.
THE PLAN:
Get in better shape and health for a variety of reasons such as: Anniversary trip in January will be so much more fun if not my current health status. Really a good idea to be healthier than I am currently. Who among is doesn't need goals which stretch us beyond ourselves?!
THE ACTION:
I decided to go to the one friend that I am afraid of being my own little slothful self around and ask for help. (NOTE: she's practically a freak in her own right with healthy eating and exercise.:)
THE RESULT:
I would certainly hate to be a whiner. (It's just not in my nature...snicker) but there is a good chance that the aforementioned friend is trying to kill me. We joke about how I have approximately 1/2 hour after my workout to shower, do hair/makeup etc before my muscles will no longer work and I am certifiably "special" and can't use arms (or anything below my belly button for that matter!). She does take the terms "muscle confusion and muscle failure" to heart!
I love a hard workout and the human body is incredible! I just hope that THIS human body will stick with me as I stick to my "September Resolution for 2010!" (Cross your fingers and pray:)

What...Tammy in a choir?
Many who know me know certain things about me. Those who knew me "pre-Les" knew someone who was going to be a famous writer. Those who knew me during the "Young Women Years" knew a woman driven to inspire modesty and testimonies in young women. (during this time my own mother told me that I was a prude but I'm sure I wouldn't change my behavior). Now I am enjoying the 'settling' that my soul has been taking. I'm comfortable with who I am. I don't necessarily search out new experiences. I take joy in the place that my life is at right now. (This is not to infer that my life is roses and koolaid. The kids still live here and last I checked so does the husband so we all know that means I am not truly in control of my little universe.:))
I received a call from a friend in the ward two weeks ago asking me to join a womens choir in Salt Lake. I laughed, thanked her and explained that everyone knows that I play the piano. She said that she felt strongly about calling me, so I told her I would think about it. Anyways, I did it! I paid my money, and jumped in the car pool headed to the first rehearsal. Ladies and Gentlemen...in the matter of 2 1/2 hours I was able to channel the drama princess of my youth, mix her with my contented present self and become one fired up little singer! My private dream has always been to sing and I will be the first to admit that Heavenly Fathers knows me so well that He knows if I truly had that talent I would have broken my Mother's heart many years ago with choices I would have made in pursuit of fame. However, it was so fulfilling to me to join these women in songs of the heart and being able to share my love of the gospel one more way. On the way home I turned to the dear friend in the car who invited me to join her choir and told her it felt as though I had just attended a very successful therapy session!

Cousin Sleepover
It really wasn't just a bad idea that took on a life of it's own. I knowingly and willfully decided to have a cousins sleepover (that's the only kind I allow the boys:)). So, every boy cousin who lives in Utah and is sleepover age (potty trained and within a half hour of his own parents should a middle of the night return trip become necessary) came for a sleepover last night. There are eight boys in this house and one of mine is at scout camp this week!
All went rather smoothly last night, no one fought and everyone played. I accepted that they are in fact boys and it would not be quiet play. There was running, yelling, shooting, dying (which isn't necessarily a quiet thing if the one dying is bugged about the fake bullets and someone else declaring, "I killed you"). I put the little ones which consists of the four boys under the age of eight down for bed about 10:00. We discussed in detail how we do NOT get up at 5 am to play the Wii because that is the room the big boys will be sleeping in. Then I asked the big boys, (those over the age of eight) to go to bed around 11:30. And then my night began....
I was reading a book (of course) so I didn't mind being up but Carson came up at 11:45 in tears because he wants to sleep and they (big boys) are playing games. I generously suggest that he sleep in his room. Good plan, I put him to bed. Then, for the next FOUR hours my Carson had nightmares and every thirty minutes was up crying. I held him while sitting on the couch because after awhile it was just cruel to my system to tease it with thoughts of sleep for myself. finally I am headed to bed around 3 am. Still I'm doing OK, I'll get four hours of sleep. NOPE, the little boys are well rested and up for the day at 5:30 so that they get a turn playing on the Wii. I could cry. I surrendered.
Things to learn:
1. need more snacks, everyone was "starving to death" by 9:30.
2. need to throw away the pretend guns, (must include: nerf, rubber band, cheap silver cowboy, plastic machine, and any object like unto a gun!) way too loud at 5:30 in the morning!
3. Perhaps both sides of the family is overkill on cousin sleepover night.
4. mommy needs a really big nap before and after such endeavors.
Maybe the boys will have good memories and I can nap later.:)

Canning with boys
My guys are great! This week, without any complaining, they got up early and went with me to pick beans and life was good. Monday night I processed my first batch of beans, and it was good. Tuesday I got up and started to prepare my next batch of beans, all was going well until I locked the lid on the processor, turned on the stove and then started looking for the rocker. (This is put on the steam escape valve once the steam has been coming out nice and steady for five minutes or so.) It is vital.
I can't find the !(@*&# rocker anywhere. I pull out the fridge and file the mental instructions to not die or become physically maimed, which would put me in need of a nurse or well meaning friends, before I have a chance to clean behind the offending appliance. I check all my drawers and cupboards just in case the boys zealously cleaned without me looking (some dreams will die without being realized). Then I took meaningful action...I called my Mom to see if she would bring her processor (she will), I march to my food storage room and break out 2 liters of emergency diet Dr. Pepper (don't judge me, I don't care what's in your emergency food storage:)), and then I calmly questioned the boys again...
Mommy: Showing a visual aid (side of processor box), "Garrett, have you seen this rocker?"
Garrett: "No, but look at all the things you can do with your big pan." (Sometimes he fails to see the big picture as Mommy is hooking up her Dr. Pepper IV).
Mommy: "Dallen, have you seen this rocker?"
Dallen: After much study of the picture, "Sure." and then he turns to leave, shoots over his shoulder, "Carson was sucking on that when he was chasing me this morning."
Mommy: "CARSON!", once the little fellow shows his face..."Have you seen this rocker."
Carson: "I think that the last time I saw it, it was in my mouth while I was spitting at Dallen."
SIDE NOTE: Perhaps something a little stronger than Diet Dr. Pepper is needed in the emergency food storage.
By then Grandma has swooped in to save her posterity from their Mom and they go on a hunt for the rocker because it is clearly no longer in my little angel's mouth. Mommy stays at the table and is slowly counting to 100.
Then, VICTORY, for whatever reason (which truly, I'm just too old and there is no sense playing with my emotional health so I didn't even ask why) Carson had hidden the rocker in his bed and then promptly forgot about that endeavor. The results being my frantic morning.
My life is not interesting because I am basically a boring person with no hobbies, talents or outside skills. However, my boys fill every last little part of my time and heart with their bigger than life personalities and their love. I laugh so very often at their everyday lives and am so grateful that I get to witness and sometimes suffer from them. It is also my hope that the boys can live through a lifetime of a Mom with a weird sense of humor as she views the lives being lived around her. People are just so incredibly interesting! Good Luck Boys!

The forbidden clothes
Last night I scolded the kids for the millionth time this week to stay out of Hunter's room while he is at one of his camps. Carson said, "I didn't go in there except to get some of his clothes to wear today." Garrett says, "I only went in to see if he had anything that I would like to wear." So, a couple things: My poor children truly don't seem to understand, "stay out" doesn't mean, "stay out unless you are curious as to the belongings in your brother's room. Also, are my boys really girls in disguise? I thought only girls shared and stole clothing!

Family Fun Day
We weren't able to go on a camping vacation that we had planned this week for a variety of reasons. We decided to still have Les take the time off and we would just have fun doing things together as a family for a couple of days.
Day 1
We went to the movies, Diary of a Wimpy Kid. Kids loved it, Mom and Dad loved the kids loving it. Then we drove up to the mountains and let the kids play in a river, had a picnic and then went to a dam and fished. The boys loved the entire day and I was filled with an overwhelming sense of peace at spending time with our little family.
Day 2
We went to the Air Force Museum, the boys loved playing in all of the simulators and hands on games. The boys then came home to play a game they had saved for and bought together for the Wii while Mom and Dad went to lunch together. Later, Uncle Tom and Daddy went fishing with Garrett and Carson. Dallen and Hunter played games and I visited with them and read.
It was a great two days. We rarely take time to only do things with just our little family. It was priceless with tons of memories. Perfect.

Dallen's vacation
My brother likes to take Dallen with him when their family goes camping. Why?...because it helps to keep his son Carter entertained. They went for a four day trip over Memorial Day. By the end I was ready to have my little man back, I missed him because no matter how much I joke about them, my boys are my world and my heart belongs to them and their Daddy.
Anyways, the first thing Dallen tells me when he gets back is that he ate a worm. (Not shocked, I have too many boys for that to be my reaction.:)) No, the funny part is that my dear Sister In Law thought that she would have to bribe him to get him to do it. My little angel FLEECED Aunt Mandee for six dollars. Between you and me, I know that he would have done it for a quarter. (Don't tell Aunt Mandee).

I knew it would happen...
I understand that teenagers need their independence. I get that. I also understand that sometimes parents are found to be an embarrassment. I get that. Today, my first born...(the one whom I practice parenting on because there are no practice models of children,) shunned me. I know! Shocking! I expect you are as stunned as I was when he actually did it!
I was at the Jr. High waiting in the hallway to go into the choir room with a neighbor girl. (I was accompanying her for a solo, I don't just go to school with the neighbors for giggles.) Anyways, so the Light of My Life, the Joy in My Soul, My Boy, walks past me to get to his band class. We are exactly one person apart in distance. Eye contact is made and I restrain myself from what could be considered inappropriate mommy behavior. (I don't yell out, "Hey pooky bear, I miss you", I don't run over and straighten his collar or lick my thumb and wipe a spot off his cheek etc.) No, I know better than to ruin a boys scholastic career with such behavior. I smile and start to wave (Mind you just a little, slight bend at the elbow wave, not over the head wave.) and he looks back to the ground and continues on to band. Again, shocking!
I knew it would happen, I expected some distance. He stopped letting me kiss him in public years ago but now this? It is a dark day in a mommy's heart when she realizes her little guy does not want to be associated with her in public. Oh the heartbreak! I guess I'll pull through, I have three more boys to play with until they realize that it isn't cool to be with mom in public!

Bad dreams
Dallens prayer tonight at bedtime...
after Dear Heavenly Father, thankful fors, etc then he prayed for no scary dreams...then he prayed for no scary dreams which would wake him up, then he prayed for no scary dreams with animals in them, then he prayed for no scary dreams in which wolves ate Daddy. Anyways,...after a solid 10 minutes of variations on the "please help me have a good night sleep" statement, he kindly added an almost postscript of, "And then help Mommy get everything done we ask her to do." Speaking as the tired Mommy from last night when we did have a bad dream, I am very grateful for his attentiveness to Mommys needs also. :)

My resolve
I love my friends! After a long day my phone started ringing off the hook. My friends were worried about my family and our safety, everyone was offering us a place to stay for the night. Apparently, there was a very sad stand-off up the street and the man ended up killing himself. We knew nothing about this because we were in the basement having family night. After that we pulled our curtains upstairs shut (because I think they are bullet-proof) and watched the going-ons of my street. Homes were evacuated up to my house and the police tape was drawn across the street. I was never scared for our safety but really just so sad for those involved. How sad that this man didn't have friends searching him out to make sure he was OK or just to visit on a random Monday in his life. I will resolve to be a better friend and to open my home to those in need more often.

Mom,...you're funny.
Today I returned to the 'volunteering-three-days-a-week' because I am very very bad at trying to schedule all our teachers on the same day and I am a sucker when a teacher says something along the lines of,..."Mrs. James, we could really use some help with (then fill in the blank)".
Anyways, I am helping in G's class on Mondays now with a reading group. I talked with the teacher a little after I was done and then I went on my merry way. When Garrett came home he came up and said, "Mom, Ms. B thinks that you are a funny person."
Those who know me know that I love to make people laugh and I find this quite the compliment. Now, the reality check...this woman also says that I remind her of the school officer. (Between you and I, the school officer is a nice woman but a little 'butch', I know...naughty me for judging). Clearly Ms. B's perspectives must be taken with a grain of salt. Happy Volunteering!

First Monday of the New Year!
Normally, I like Monday. I have lots of energy and can accomplish many things. It was going well, I was in the Zone! Pulling through the day and finally getting dinner in the oven. THEN:
Carson and Garrett were sent out to walk the dog. When they returned Carson unhooked the dog (in actuality she is the size of a small pony!) and threw the leash into the garage. Now, whether it is the cold weather or bad aim or both- he hits the back window of the van with the leash and now the window is crackling and falling in little tiny pretty pieces onto the ground.
True confession time: I behaved badly and in a VERY LOUD VOICE instructed him to get far far away from me and to start cleaning anything and everything! Then I locked myself in the office to have a little quiet time out.
So, my week started off on the down slope but perhaps it won't get worse. But I guess anything is possible, it's not like the boys have moved out and I do in fact have a couple unbroken possessions in my house.

Icky New Year
New Years was a bust. I was so excited because I was going to throw a party for a few families in the neighborhood. The boys diligently cleaned with me and we got the food ready. (OK, Les cooked the turkey the day before but I BOUGHT the rolls and laid the frozen dough out on the cookie sheets). Mostly I am a low maintainence hostess and prefer to spend my time with guests than exhausted from cooking all day. So,...future note to any persons invited to my house: The food isn't incredible but the company is great! (full of myself,...I know).
About 2 hours before the party, I start throwing up. Les says, I'll be OK and will probably now feel better. Not true. 1 hour before party I call first friend to cancel party. (This is where I know that I have the best friends in the world). She (friend on phone) takes custody of party, my family and sends over her hubby with Sprite for the afflicted (me). It is so nice to know that friends are sometimes more like family. I am a lucky woman!
Side note: My sweet Carson, when Les came home to check on me during the party Carson came with him and covered me with blankets, patted my head and offered to stay with me instead of going back to the party. I made him return to the party. (I didn't need anyone watching me sleep) but it was nice to be so loved.
